Highlights - Diane D. Garcia

Mayor Benito Doma of Prieto-Diaz, Sorsogon said that he and farmer Leoncio Detablan of Lupi of this town who made contact with a heron suspected of being a carrier of the avian flu remained in good health and showed no symptoms of the dreaded disease. Detablan had earlier caught the bird that had a stainless steel tag labeled Tokyo, Japan and he subsequently brought the bird to Mayor Doma. After some examinations, he ordered it buried. Result was...it was not infected after all. And that's the good news.
Migratory birds for its vast mangrove forest are frequenting Prieto-Diaz. The town is included in the bird-flu watch list.
This prompted the World Health Organization to visit Prieto-Diaz to check on the report.
Meanwhile, Sorsogon Gov. Raul Lee called for all municipal mayors and health officials in the province and discussed the proper monitoring activities to prevent entry of suspected bird-flu carriers.

Twelve opposition bets top the recent nationwide survey conducted by the research group, IBON Foundation. Top runners are: Loren Legarda, Sorsogon Rep. Francis Escudero, Taguig-Pateros Alan Peter Cayetano, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Sen. Manny Villar, Sen.
Francis Pangilinan, Sen. Gringo Honasan, San Juan Mayor Joseph "JV" Ejercito and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that their equipment for monitoring Mount Bulusan in Sorosogn has been stolen. Thieves also stole copper wire phone cables at their Legaspi City observatory, in a separate incident.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources lifted the suspension on Australian company Lafayette Philippines Inc.'s mining operations in Rapu-Rapu Island, Albay. The operations was suspended last Nov. 2005 after the site was plagued by mining tailings which brought health hazard to the coastal communities and reported fish kill in the nearby river.
The decision is good for Lafayette but a grim one for the communities within and around Rapu-Rapu Island.

Thanks for the update Diane.

Very interesting news related to my beloved home province of Sorsogon. Thanks Diane.
I am still dismayed with the devastating effects of the Rapu-Rapu mining and the Mayon volcano eruptions.

For U.S. residents, the TV Patrol Tagalog channel is very informative on Phil. national news.

I try to follow-up the political career of our own Congressman Escudero who is now running for Senator in the opposition party.

Do you think Sorsoganons, and the Bicol Region as a whole regardless of political parties will vote for him as a Senator.

Anonymous said...

I wonder what controls or what effective inspection system have been installed to prevent repetition of the disastrous failures of that Australian Rapu-Rapu Mining company.
I also wonder if that mining company have paid the hundreds of fishermen and all those residents adversely affected by their mining.

I want to read more political comments regarding the political situation in Sorsogon.

Will Bacon District vote overwhelmingly for Escudero?

Should they? Why?

Anonymous said...

I often watch the ABS CBN's TV Patrol here in the U.S. and often saw Francis Escudero in the news.
He indeed appears very inteligent and truly articulate.
But the issue presented by "Bakekang" as to whether Escudero did anything of significance for Sorsogon is valid.
Can anyone name Escudero's accomplishments in Sorsogon to refute Bakekang's contention? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Based on their comments, can one safely assume that Juan De La Cruz
is pro-opposition and Bakekang a pro-government sympathizer?

Anonymous said...

Bakekang, you are so convincing.

The negative comments made by Adonis and Bakekang regarding Francis Escudero seem very harsh. As a U.S. resident who often watches TV Patrol and who had taken pride that a Sorsoganon is often in the limelights, I am shocked and appalled at those comments. Very disappointing.

Anonymous said...

Adonis and Bakekang must be agents of the Sorosogon Provincial government?

Anonymous said...

Let us all remember this saying, TO THINK IS EASY AND TO ACT IS DIFFICULT.

Another Sorsoganon, bidding for a senatorial comeback is Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan. While being kept in a tight security in Laguna over rebellion charges, he had a rock-concert-style campaign in Davao City complete with confettis, free shirts & caps, antics & speeches and election
jingles. In a four-minute video-recorded message, he appealed for votes from his "Mindanawon" (his wife hails from Davao City).

His son filed a petition in court to grant temporary release of his father to allow him to campaign.

Is this logic acceptable?

Escudero and Honasan are famous Sorsoganons, therefore all Sorsoganons should vote for them?

Should Filipinos ontinue to vote and put into office any famous person and celebrity?

Anonymous said...

I'm new in Philippine politics,I easily get confused between Alan Peter Cayetano & Francis Escudero.

They have so much similarities, so much in common.

Anonymous said...

Gregorio Honasan, Loraine Legarda, Chiz Escudero, lahat ay successfull politicians past and presents. Their greatest accomplishmanet.

Of all comments, I like Bakekang’s last remarks re the true measure of a leader is not education nor is the aptitude to be artful in vocalizing one's presumed significant presence. These things are learned and can be copied for varied purposes and could simply invite doubts. What counts is what comes from the heart and soul and supported by wisdom.

How I wish the Philippines would recover from its sad state. It's been so looong already. To think that there are many intelligent Filipinos, and yet..... but why? It has been hit terribly with the social cancer.

A very good clarification from Annie and no participant should forget it. Let’s be carried away in the right direction.

Might I add that in my opinion, the entire series of commentaries, exchange of opinions or anything similar is healthy for those who maintain an open mind. One understands more the dispositions of others and discovers more the deeper meaning of empathy. This exercise might as well draw the different forces that abound in our minds and hearts, to some form of an art that could be the vessel towards harmony, towards better understanding of what really is important in life. However, since we are all different, those whose blood pressure easily rises with discussions like this should probably wait for another lighter topic. Anyone with a humorous article?

In more specific terms, this exchange of remarks is also a way of determining the kind of outlook our kababayans have of life and their discriminating tastes. Filipinos are very political to the core, likely a “quarter of a centimeter” away from being innate. I do remember that some Filipino families or clans or friends allow this kind of political energy to divide them, sadly at times with the use of violence. I remember too that children at a tender age of 6 would already know the political candidates. Some of them had favorites already. Just the thought of it all......now, I think I need a humorous article; not the kind of “Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”. Anyone?

How come Filipinos have a penchant to cuddle political dynasties. In Sorsogon, we have the husband and wife Lees, governor and mayor respectively. Escudero was a descendant of a former governor. Perhaps other Sorsogon towns also have their dynasties where wives and children followed the footsteps of the father?

As a Sorsoganon, I am fascinated at the career of Gringo Honasan. Through the years, per the TV Patrol News, he seem to be connected to a some rebellions or mutinies. I also remember him being in prison during Cory Aquino's presidency. Does anyone know why?

To you Tess,
Nice to hear from you.
Thanks. I'm now in my prime.

Where is Paul's comment? I bet he's disappointed..

Kisses to Baby Mark.

For "sorsoganon in u.s.", I am furnishing you info about Gringo Honasan.
-----------------------------------
It was noted that Gringo Honasan was a major influence in both crises -" the Oakwood incident and the Feb. 26 "standoff"- both related to failed military coup attempts. Playing on the idealism of young officers by using a mixture of stories and rituals to inspire and brainwash them.

He also gave his version of what was behind the 1986, 1987 and 1989 revolution and talked about the need for reforms.

During one of the meetings with the junior officers of the Philippine Military Academy, Gringo intoduced the rituals such as use of code names, oaths, prayers and the signing of names in blood. Not just pinprick blood but blood drawn with a "shortened samurai" used to inscribe a "K" in the left inner arm. The "K" had to be in ancient Filipino script.

He was also accused of using his pork barrel as senator to finance the activities of the group.

He published "National Recovery Program" and was used by the young officers as a recruitment guide.

The above-mentioned activities of Gringo Honasan was stated in the affidavit of 1st Lt. Lawrence San Juan dated July 15,2006.

In an interview made by The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Gringo Honasan admitted involvement in only three - 1986, 1987 and 1989, of the many that he was being blamed for. He also talked about how government has been linking him to the Oakwood mutiny.

I don't think the common tao in the Philippines really care who they vote for, for as long as there some few pesos in return for their vote.
They also know that those politicians once in power will not even look back to give them any help. Proof: generation after generation the poor people in the Philippines become poorer regardless of who the president or senator or governor in power. Does it matter really? Escudero , Honasan who cares?

I know & heard only good things of the older family of Francis Escudero & Gringo Honasan in Sorsogon during my time.

A sweet apple tree will not bear fruit to a sour mango.

Anonymous said...

For Bacongnons, you might be interested to know that Gringo Honasan descended from an old family in San Roque, Bacon - the Ballesteros/Nicolas clan. He was named after his grandfather, Gregorio Ballesteros. His mother grew up in Bibincahan, Sorsogon and his father was from Bulan.

Well taken old timer Sorsoganon.

True, an apple tree can't bear fruit to a mango.

But an apple tree from a sweet apple seed can bear fruit to a sour, deformed & rotten apple.

And a mango tree from a sour seed can bear fruit to a sweet, perfect mango.

Salamat tabi. Peace.
