Sandataan 2009 Report

Logo designed by Ramon Alcazar Dellosa 1981

As promised, here's a report of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Sandataan hosted by Bacon Sandataan Association (Metro Manila), Inc.:

The affair started at about 7:30 in the evening at the 3rd floor of Jade Valley Restaurant (along Timog Avenue, Quezon City) and more or less 150 persons attended the occasion.

At around 8:00, Honorable Congressman Salvador H Escudero III with his aide, Kaka Llamas arrived. After an exchange of some pleasantries with the officers and attendees, Honorable Governor Sally A. Lee, likewise arrived with a lady companion. The VIPs seated in one table.

A short program was organized, with an initial singing of the National Anthem followed by an invocation of Father Dario Diesta Deocareza.

Next, was a welcome address by the President, Cherry Latosa-Mendenilla, followed by the inspirational messages of Governor Lee and Cong. Escudero. Both VIPs applauded the officers of the BSAI for their selfless dedication in continuously promoting a traditional activity of Bacongnons, an association of Sorsoganons solely existing( to borrow the words of Cong. Escudero) in Metro Manila.

Likewise, both has commended the UNITY that Bacongnons has shown and further stressed that such character of Bacongnons is indeed a contributory factor in the development of Sorsogon in general.

Other attendees were residents of Gatbo; Sugod, led by Judge Martinez and wife; Sto. Domingo; San Isidro; San Juan; San Roque; Balete; a balikbayan from Maricrum; Atty. Romy Morato and wife Minda of Poblacion; the family of Latosa of Jardin; the family of Atenciana of Burabod; a certain Ms Doringo of Bon-ot and company; Mr. Marcial Doringo, a known original organizer of the Metro Manila Sandataan, who came in with a walker because of an ailment.

Also Mr. Honorio Dioquino, who have just recuperated from a heart stroke, arrived and with his old age, still, was able to dance the Pantomina.

Others were not residents of Bacon but friends invited coming from Albay, Metro Manila and Sorsogon as well.

The main event of the occasion was Ballroom Dancing, assisted by a live band from Magdalena, Laguna, which was gratefully appreciated by the whole group for its wonderful music, music for all ages.

According to Atty. Morato, it was indeed a successful yearly traditional reunion of Bacongnons here in Metro Manila and further looking forward for more attendees on December 30, 2010.The affair ended at about 12:30 AM.

I am happy to note that the Sandataan Association Inc. logo designed by Ramon Alcazar Dellosa has not been changed or altered since its incorporation in 1981.

Ramon Alcazar Dellosa, designer of Sandataan logo was a handsome former college of Fine Arts professor at the University of Sto.Tomas.

He organized & was President of Creative concepts, a leading advertising agency at the time.

Mr. Dellosa suffered a stroke & was forced to retire. His wife also a Fine Arts graduate took over the business.

It must have been one of those Sandataan nights to remember....have attended a few in the past; quite a gathering I must say. The dancing is something to enjoy, participant or not, but the smell of alcohol among many spoiled the ambience, not to mention some drama, some harambugan.....but through it all, the joy of being among Bacongnons and the love for festive gatherings persisted; the latter, hopefully not the only known unifying force among the children of Bacon and neighbouring townfolks.

Now that all the celebrations are done and everyone had a good time, would the Sandataan officers give us an idea of the project(s) being planned to help Bacon?

Indeed, a very good and valid question. It would be highly commendable, and even greater to see, in the project(s) planned to help Bacon, the level of “UNITY” shown in the Sandataan preparations and attendance. Sandataan being inherently of Bacon --- it is not surprising, but actually expected, that such unanimity should start from Bacon, from Bacongnons.

An uplifted Bacon, particularly in its economic areas, and certainly, in its most sensitive, meaningful civic and social aspects, denotes the character of its people and is definitely “a contributory factor in the development of Sorsogon in general” (to borrow somebody else’s words). In this regard, people (I believe some with respectable stature were in attendance at the 2009 Sandataan) in the administration or government of Sorsogon as a whole, should take to heart this responsibility…….not just the fun and festive part of it, as facilitated by the recent Sandataan social event.

To Ramon Alcazar Dellosa, a prayerful hope for better health. Take care.

To Sandataan Officer:

Truly appreciate your your report. The Sandtaan event I think was a success. But you mentioned only a very few notable Bacongnons. Are you sure they were the only ones who attended?

I only attended one time a Sandataan event 30 years ago but it was very memorable.

Thank you for all those comments and reports regarding the Sandataan.

OK. Praises galore for this Sandataan Report. Kabanga sana ini kan kabilugan kan mga gibo-gibo kan Sandataan. Nata ta dae nang unabihon kan su pig-report can inot na igua daang mga prohecto para mabuligan an kadaklan kan Bacongnon?

Baco man taon-taon, kundi magkapira man lamang.

My sentiments exactly, Aw hain na. I hope there are really projects to help Bacon and its needy residents. I hope the Sandataan really is no longer just an organization for dancing and celebration, as the new group had claimed.

Obviously, it is so early in the year for any concrete steps to be completed. But, so far, we have not heard anything from the officers; nor any plans or even ideas for any effort to help Bacon, so that the people in need would have at least something to hope for.

I hope it's not too much to hope for. I hope there really is something that the organization will do to help Bacon. I hope the Sandataan is not really just an organization for social events.

I hope . . . . .

To Aw hain na/Tagabulod,

Siguro dara kan eksperiencia nya an mga pigsasabi nya. However, we need action not words. Jenny's words are good but we need...help....

I hope .....sabi ni Tagabulod.

Aw, Hain na....dai magparahanap. Halat kan mga taga Bacon an dakula mo man na bulig. Contact them or meet them personally kun may on going project sinda o dai. OK?

It's been two weeks since I expressed the hope that the Manila Sandataan group would tell us what their plans are to help Bacon. Sadly, there has been no response nor reaction. If there is a real project, they would have been crowing about it by now. If there is at least an idea or a plan we would have known by now. Because of their deafening silence, I then take it to mean that there is none.

Too many groups and associations have disappointed too many people too many times. But the irony of it is there is no way anyone can force an association to do what it does not want to do (except maybe the government if the association is legally registered).

I would therefore express other hopes. I hope that the Manila Sandataan group will stop claiming that they are not just a social organization but had helped or will help Bacon. I hope that they keep to what they do best - having a big social event before New Year. And I hope that they will stick to their socials and stop trying to give the impression that they are civic spirited (a spirit which, as usually happens, ends when the photographers and videographers leave).

And finally, I hope they show some honesty and tell us the real nature and purpose of the association.

Really, Taga Kuta? Did you not hear your voice in the tone of your comment in my article, HOLD THE PANACEA? You don’t even like my style. You stated too that there is no need to motivate Bacongnons and that there are already many heroes in Bacon. Now, you say my words are good and I may be your leader to help improve Bacon. And you are inviting me? Really, again. Why would I want to collaborate with somebody whose protean tendencies are conspicuously a warning sign? Read my articles; there is one common denominator: CHARACTER.
