Thanks.
I'll be there. Can I just pay at the gate?

There is Sandataan, there is Bacon Alumni Association and what else? Why don’t all of you also combine your resources and talents to alleviate Bacon’s moral and ethical issues as these are already streaming down to the civic and social aspects of its daily life and are hampering long-term progress? Donations for charity, fixtures here and there would mean nothing if deep inside there is a decay more destructively potent than the lack of material things and the outright disregard of what should be for Bacon residents. That decay should not be overlooked. It should be attended to simultaneously, if not first, with other charitable or social activities. this would mean more use of wisdom than academic intelligence. But then again, it would be so un-Pinoy. what was I thinking?

There is nothing worse than doing nothing. Anything done by Sandataan(Metro-Manila), Bacon Alumni Association(Poblacion,Bacon)and many charitable Bacongnons may never be enough or may just be a dent to all the deep seated ills in Bacon but it should not a reason or an excuse not to do anything.
Annonymous 8877 should be more specific on what he means, take the lead in the charge and I will follow. Seriously. For Bacon, anything.

Here we go again...!
What visible projects does Sandataan had accomplished? The "Welcome Arch of Bacon/Sorsogon boundary? The last time I went there (July 2008), I've seen none. When I visited the library to do some research, I got nothing! We know that you have a very limited resources but for more than 73 years you got nothing? We also know that you are "regularly" conducting medical mission/s but what is the frequency?...and where? Have you gone to some far-flung areas of Bacon, where most of the medical/social attentions are needed? Anonymous 8877 is right, UNITY is the best solution to alleviate Bacon's primary problems.

My primary concern now is to bring back Bacon to its former status. I know that there are some patriotic people there in Sandatan who can help us. Please bring back the old glory of Bacon and its name!

By the way, this is the best place where you can post your MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS. You are are 74 yrs old now...and your Momma wants to know what you've done in school!

On Anonymous 8877’s and El Muralla’s comments:

I have also wondered, because I have heard Filipinos asked each other as to when and how the country as a whole could change. I thought, uhmm, why not just Bacon. One can see through remarks in this blog; through the way its participants comment; through the transparency of the priorities most Bacongnons have, that truly, it is a very valid question.

Charities are good and they should not stop, provided they are not tainted. True, new beautiful things continue to appear, but usually, they are just for the eyes; it stops there. In my younger years, it seemed sufficient; it seemed moving forward, but my mature years state otherwise. There is not enough for the soul, nothing intangible that could bind the citizens together to create a lasting foundation and strength that would serve a solid, better future. I have also taken this thought to Bacon.

The onus is more (not to mean solely, an emphasis) on the individuals already in the limelight, with easy access, with the right associations to initiate something that would be progressively long-term, not retreatingly long-term, definitely not fleetingly gratifying.

It would be quite a struggle (time and effort) for an unknown to start turning things around in the kind of environment Bacon has. Old, negative attitudes, judgmental dispositions and foolish pride are some inherited fixations, so well embedded that it is almost impossible to determine where to begin to change. Some are acting, vocalizing, politicking without even thinking what they are setting as examples for the young. Things are already so ingrained in Bacon that perhaps it’s the youth everyone should focus on. Bacon has a good number of intellectuals still moving around its scene—this is an excellent tool to proceed with a beneficent, better mental, and maybe to some extent, visceral, process, if only to allow the youth to start anew. Embark on character building, engage the citizens and interact with sincerity and honesty, let go of some mentalities that contradict it, break the chain, then tomorrow will be better. For the most part, things worth having are not inherited.

The complaint of Annonymous 8877 regarding decay of moral and ethical issues seem so abstract and blurred. Don't understand what Sandataan or Bacon Alumni can do about it. It seems like blather to me.

El Muralla has more specifics with his complaints but his talk about Unity as solution seem blather too.

For decades thousands of Bacongnons left Bacon for a better life in Metro Manila or abroad. Many succeed. Some became professionals. Some became wealthy. Some of them now look down on those poor Bacongnons left behind with contempt and condescension. They even are contemptous for Sandataan and Bacon Alumni.

Ethics and morality are abstract in a way. It should not be put aside ‘coz look at what is happening among our kapwa Pinoy. Tutoo, there are those umiiling na laang when the Phil. situation on these topics are discussed. Siguro any part of the country is so soaked that even the mention of ethics and morals is like, what, what do you mean, come again? How? I am sure Sandataan and the Alumni have rules to follow with regard to these abstracts. But go beyond your clubs. Sandataan and Alumni is a good concept, and it gives benefits to some, but it could be made nobler and bigger. Look at the list of members. There is no shortage of good people who have abilities and can think bigger. Instead of looking at the remark with more purpose, it is shrugged off and labeled foolish talk or blather. This is exactly why Pinoys don’t move up. Their amor propio is so big that any suggestion or criticism, however constructive, is considered a big dent to their persona. And a lot can not work properly above that. And what you get is bitter counter attack. Very counter progressive. Why not analyze and think. On another topic, are these condescending people really condescending or did they realize something wrong and that made them look condescending to those persons who can not take criticisms? Are there those who are just contented to receive charity? Are they getting motivations to better themselves so that they do not have to rely on charities? What are other citizens doing to help reduce reliance on charity? Are some charities masks for personal ambitions or prestige? Maaaring bako man. But it needs some thinking. Not everyone is pure anywhere. If leaders and followers ache on suggestions and constructive criticisms, it is a small wonder why many left and will be leaving.

Blather ba laang ang ethics and morality?. Same with unity too? Do you know that you have to unite first to have a stronger force? Tsk-tsk-tsk-tsk.

Sandataan was organized before WWII primarily for social purpose among Bacongnons in Manila so they can see eachother every year in a very pleasant setting. Alumni Homecoming was also organized I think in early 1990's for the same reason. There was no political, religious or civic motivations. It was purely social.

Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

I sometimes go back to Bacon and I love those poor, humble people back home. They are simple and without higher educations but I really don't see the "decay of moral and ethics" that people seem so sanctimious.

Anonymous said...

Actually, the Sandataan started way before WWII in Bacon, when Bacon was one of the leading towns in Sorsogon. The Sandataan was the event of the year attended by many from as far as Legazpi City, Bulan and Irosin. I can still remember that this was still the event to attend up to the early to mid 1950s.

As far as I can gather, the Manila Sandataan was formed to replicate the Bacon celebration by those Bacongnons in Manila who could not go home to attend the Bacon event. This was a really good way to remember and re-live the hallowed event of the hometown.

But wherever the Sandataan is held, it would and should always reflect the best that Bacongnons are capable of.

To Bacongnon Man Sa NY:

Thank you so much for the enlightenment. Your comment is really a precious historical insight of Sandataan.

Again, thanks.

it looks like that comments about the darker side of some Bacongnons have been ignored in this section. there are remarks in this internet site that somehow agree with the question of “decay,” “ethics and morals”. why were they not contradicted in that section by those who claim these things do not exist in Bacon? even without the remarks it is pretentious not to acknowledge that there are wrong things going on.

from simple worker, Sandataan and Alumni are only for social and with this i imagine dressing up in the best possible way, drinking till one can’t determine left from right, dancing, stories true or not, loud often senseless arguing and angry i thought, and some gossiping. i know because i attended a few of them.

from bacongnon man sa ny “But wherever the Sandataan is held, it would and should always reflect the best that Bacongnons are capable of”. good thing that they are doing some limited good works otherwise it would be a complete shame if we take sosyalan as the one that would and should always be reflected as the best bacongnons are capable of.
what is really the best that they are capable of?

All the things you see in a small town like Bacon, such as drinking, gossiping, political backbiting, poverty, etc, etc. are not "ethical & moral decay" and they exist for generations and they exist all over the world in the same way as humility, goodness, laughter, hospitality, and their innate sense of humanity, and their authenticity as human beings.
I find talks and rhetorics about "unity", "decay", "academic intelligence", "to change", etc.,etc. seem hollow and mere lip service.

Sandataan and Alumni Homecoming were organized for purely social reasons are facts. But of course we like to see them do more constructive things for Bacon. The School Water Tank was a start. Perhaps improvement of the public library is another. Perhaps a movement to return Bacon to its original independent status. Any tangible, specific project will certainly be welcome. I just simply find abstract, blurring generalizations like "moral decay and unity " a bit more like blather.

Anonymous said...

I agree with A Nobody Bacongnon. The Sandataan was formed purely for socializing purposes. It was never intended for any community improvement purposes or "moral or ethical" reasons. Whatever the Sandataan can come up with for a project can be considered a plus.

It is different from the defunct BACIA (Bacon Community Improvement Association) which was primarily intended to undertake projects for community improvement. The BACIA's last project is the present BACIA Auditorium next to the Bacon Municipal Building. Unfortunately, BACIA died a natural death amid loss of interest and time by its members; mainly as a result of the deteriorated economic conditions they found themselves in.

Cool it guys!

This is just an invitation to a party to welcome the New Year w/ your friends & family.
It is not a charity or some kind of revolutionary gathering.

If you want to donate for their cause, that's great.
If not, that's fine too.
Just enjoy the night.

Anonymous said...

A blather or shall we say...nonesense? Unity is not nonesense. BACIA died because of no supports given by our fellow Bacongnons. They initiated the development of our town but only few supported it.

Kaya nga minsan, iniisip ko kung bakit madaming kasag at kalasakas sa Bacon...hanggang sa ngayon!

To Bacongnon Man Sa NY:

Thank you again for your historical insight specially about BACIA. You seem to be one of the rare precious few left who knows so much historical gems.

To: Guinalpong: I agree with talks about "unity" when it is properly used as a noble call for a specific noble cause.

To Sunshine: Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Thanks.

I can not believe how limited Bacongnons are! There is no room to imagine better things except, material and happy go lucky things.

Anonymous said...

Bacongnons are all over the world. They are in every continent in this planet. Many of them succeeded in their endeavors. There is no limit to their capacity to fulfill their dreams.

I also have no time for platitudes and sanctimony and rhetorics regarding unspecified, unknown idealism.

We will live in good agreement if we all just live by the day. Let's mind our own businesses. Enjoy and hope to see everyone in our much awaited Sandataan.

Sarcasm! Nice try. Nobody got it!

A toast to you, Mr. THOUGHTS! I'll drink with you today...on top of KUTA (if the residents there will permit us!)and see the "beauty" of our historical heritage. Enjoy! Kampai...!

adopted daughter of bacon...
Dear Bacongnons,,

All of you are giving your comments about Sandataan & Alumni, ( good grace, thanks to them, at least they are doing some effort to help our dear Bacon) but how about you?, have ever thought of for a moment, about asking yourself, have I done anything to help Bacon hometown?)... why not instead of giving comment, etc .. etc.. do your share in helping one way or the other fellow Bacongnons not just monetary but spiritually.....On my part, as adopted daughter, whenever i come home to Bacon, I see to it that I can help the needy but deserving school children, because I always remember what Jose Rizal said, " The youth is the hope of the fatherland"......

To Anonymous,

I agree with you on children being the future of our country. In fact, of any country, and it goes without saying. It is chronological, biological even; with or without any hero or wise man quoting the fact. However, the quote is a reminder, especially in challenging times where self-serving intentions are shamelessly made obvious.

There is a need to do more that is lasting. Not just “band-aid” solutions. Who knows, as officers of Sandataan and Alumni retire or are replaced, so would their limited good acts towards those needing help. This is the reason why I try to stir the minds of sympathetic and able Bacongnons to do more (re my comments in other articles). As one good Bacongnon has remarked: “They are doable”. So, why not, and who better to start it, but those already in this field. Well, of course, not all of them are qualified. Find somebody whose integrity is intact and ask him/her to lead. Get together and start discussions towards well-thought goals (eliminate or forget being “uragon” in the process ‘coz it will destroy the whole thing). Jenny has made some remarks worth considering.

And I will mention again, it is best to establish something the poor can work on for themselves now and towards the future. Motivate and encourage them to be creative, to be self-reliant, to be resourceful. Charitable donors will not always be around to answer their immediate needs. People change, circumstances change, so, help them fend for themselves now before assistance from others ran out and before their dire circumstances or idle minds turn to crimes just to survive.
