Report from Bacon

SERIES #2
The Catholic Order of Franciscan Sisters established a small hospital in Bacon, more than 2 years ago called St. Therese Hospital. The Sisters recently added a secondary school called Immaculate Heart of Mary School. The small hospital appears neat and its in-house skeleton medical staff highly competent. Standby doctors and specialists are also on call. The report gave special emphasis in the great service the hospital is giving to Bacongnons which accepts charity, indigent patients with some assistance from the Dept. of Social Welfare.

The strong typhoons which hit Bacon in the past years and the current economic downturn globally seem to aggravate the local economy. Prices of commodities seem almost beyond the reach of ordinary Bacongnons. One can see a lot of worried and confused faces in the public market.

The old unrepaired, roof leaking public market in Pigsabunan is still being used. It is so crowded and too outdated and sufficient only to the town's population of about 40 years ago when it was built.

There is a present surge of crimes reported in Bacon. Burglaries and thieveries are occuring more often. There was even a hold up of a delivery truck in Caricaran, Bacon. No one was apprehended. All the crimes reported remain unsolved.Inspite of the amazing 2 Philippine senators (Escudero & Honasan)beloved sons of Sorsogon, there seem to be no visible assistance or benefit received for Sorsogon City. (It must also be noted that the congressman representing Sorsogon is the father of Senator Francis Escudero.)

The Community Development Fund which is supposed to assist Sorsogon City is allegely being used for the personal benefits of politicians in power.Bacongnons are again extremely frustrated for the utter lack of assistance in the construction of the Bacon Airport and the Banao Port. Those 2 great Bacon projects have been languishing in wanton abandonment for decades.

The church marble flooring project as well as the painting of the church edifice were all completed already. However the church still owes the contractor about P280,000 pesos of unpaid balance.
Report is dated Sept.9,2008. Received here in New York Sept.26,2008.

More Reports From Bacon:
While the limelights are focused on those Bacongnons in political positions such as Sorsogon City Mayor Dioneda and and City Administrator Lorna Figueroa, there are also many outstanding Bacongnons in the private sector who are very active in community service. Stalwarts in civic and religious services mentioned are the following: Jun Patria, Ofelia Reyes Azas, Manuel V.Eco, Amado Manduriao, Jr., Myrna M.Dimaano, Melchor Atutubo, Norma Atutubo, Charito, Elsa & Eden Ayo, Gloria Serrano, Atty. R. Morato. Also, many retired and active teachers, senior citizens donate their services in communityorganizations such as the school projects of the Central School Alumni, serving in committees for the town fiesta, fund raising campaigns for church projects, etc. They are the uncelebrated heroes of Bacon.

Mea Culpa. I forgot to include among the names of Bacongnons who are active in Bacon in community services: Raming Botial. He is among those who quietly serves the community unsung and uncelebrated. He lives in Basud. My apology.

Additional Report From Bacon:
1. Direct from an independent source in Bacon confirmed the highly positive report regarding the achievements by Lorna Figueroa, the City Administrator. The source likewise confirmed that people are impressed with the integrity and efficiency of Ms. Figueroa. However, the reports of the non-accomplishments and other negative aspects of the administration as reported by New Yorker are likewise factuals.

2. The same Source also informed me that the controversial structure constructed in the front door (facing Canda/Pigsabunan)of the church by the former parish priest(now deceased) had already been demolished, as ordered by the new parish priest Father Buenaobra who is by the way here in the U.S. for a 3-month vacation.

3.The disassembling of the controversial structure was headed by Jun Patria who was one of the strong advocates together with Manuel V. Eco and Lorna Figueroa in the preservation of many of the Bacon legacies. This matter if you recall was featured in the very first article of this website titled "Heritage" on Nov.4, 2006.3. There is now a separate parish independent from Our Lady of Annunciation parish in Poblacion, Bacon in Buenavista. The Parish Priest is Father Terwel.

4. There is persistent talk in Sorsogon City about alleged feud between Vice Mayor Edmundo Atutubo (whose father is also from Bacon) and the City Mayor Dioneda.

5. Unreported Footnotes: New Events Introduced during the dual celebration of the Town Fiesta and Alumni Homecoming last May 17 to 21, 2008: Folk dancing contest winner (first prize)won by a group of aging dancers(ranging from 75 to 91 years old, school batch 1929-1949) headed by retired school principal Amado Manduriao, Jr.;A Bikini contest held at the Tolong Gapo sponsored by Coca-Cola. It was the most attended event; A Disco Dance held at the town's Bacia auditorium; The Ball Room Dancing netted P14,000pesos donated to the church painting fund.My report, ladies and gentlemen, and more news from Bacon will be coming the moment I receive them, I promise.

Rene from California

In addition to the parish in Buenavista that Rene of California reported on, there is also a new parish centered in San Roque. The two were made into parishes at the same time.

It is so nice to be updated on the happenings in Bacon.

Many thanks to New Yorker and others who contributed those news items. I specially need to be updated for I had not been to Bacon for amost a decade now.

It is so disappointing that you can't read anything about Bacon in the internet.
When you read the news in the Bicol region, they mention news about Irosin, Pilar,Donsol & other towns.
I guess they refer Bacon as Sorsogon.
Bacon's identity is totally gone.
Read the news about the Bicol region on the right side of this Blog. Nothing about Bacon.

This is a lack of foresight from the politicians responsible for joining Bacon to Sorsogon namely Leovic Dioneda, Francis Escudero & other local officials.

Escudero would not care at all, he's not a Bacongnon, but Dioneda should have thought of the consequences, being a Bacongnon, if he cares.

Some people will readily sell their legacies if they believed that will gain them power and wealth. We see that in Dioneda and his supporters. The sad thing is that voters just don't care about legacies.

Did anyone see the latest Philippine map and find out if Bacon has already been erased?

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much guys for those Bacon news.

Is Bacon a modern city if it is now holding a bikini contest?

Is it so large now that there now 3 parishes?

Anonymous said...

BIKINI CONTEST?? in TULONG GAPO??

Golly, Was it done to give Sorsogon an image of a city? An ULTRA MODERN CITY?
This is totally OUTRAGEOUS!!!And these young girls allowed themselves to be EXPLOITED.
I'm sure they are not Bacongnons.
Singing contest would have been better.

I can't imagine myself in bikini here in a U.S. beach and much less in Tolong Gapo though I'm trim and not exactly so bad to look at.

The Bacon Airport and the Banao port requires congressional budgets. Those are highly significant projects that will catapult Bacon and Sorsogon City into greater levels of stability. Our national heroes in Escudero and Honasan with the beloved Congressman Escudero and at the urgings of their buddy Mayor Dioneda can and should do something about the projects'financing.

Look at the Vice Mayor's children(?) in the video tape, they're so cute trying to imitate their father's raised right hand during the oath taking.
Really cute.

I will take news from Bacon anytime. It's like a fresh invigorating air for me.

Anonymous said...

If Ed Atutubo will run for Mayor I'll vote for him even if Dioneda runs for reelection.

If Dioneda runs for reelection against non Bacongnon, I'll vote for him.

What happened to the former parish priest of Bacon?

Anonymous said...

The former parish priest in Bacon who initiated the construction of the controversial structure in front of the church door was killed in an accident last year I believed.

I just can't seem to have enough of Bacon news.

dear readers, please send more of the kind. thanks.

I would like to know more about Raul Manduriao.

Mayor Dioneda and Sen. Escudero are both authors of the cityhood of Sorsogon. In fairness to our Mayor, I've seen so many beautiful changes and achievements with regards to development of our beloved town during his administration. But how about the Senator? Has he done something for our town who supported him during his candidacy? If only he can be like his dad...

Hello Anonymous! Are you from Australia? I think I know you.

El Muralla, you seem to know Bacon in and out. how about Raul Manduriao? i believe a brother of Amado Manduriao Jr?

Si Leovic an arkitekto kan pagkawara kan bacon as a municipality para sa saiyang politikal na intereses. Last term ni leovic as mayor bago na merged an bacon sa sorsogon. Sa katoyohan nya na dai mawara sa poder ginibo nya an gabos na maraot na paagi para maging distrito an bacon can sorsogon para siya maka kandidato bilang mayor. Saro pang may sala kan pagkawara kan bacon iyo an mga supporter niya na sobra an pag idolo kay leovic, dahil daa good looking, guwapo. Kan plebisito kan merging kan bacon sa sorsogon an botante takot na magboto ki "NO" dahil sa pananakot nya sa mga botante, through the barrel of a gun. An Bacon haen, nag asenso? Dai. Lalong nag roro. Rampant an drug addiction, robbery hold up, thieveries, Rampant an tupada, aro aldaw igwa . Igwa man ki nangyayaring garadanan. Si Manay Maning Eco, paling paling an garo mariw bariw. Kun sisay an Mayor duman siya. Si Leovic dai man an magmamakulog sa Bacon ta an hanap man sana kaan KWARTA, ta dai man an ki pagsadiri o negosyo na pagkuwaan kan ikabubuhay. Sabi ngani kaito kan agom kaan "Politics is our business". Kun dai an suportahan kan mga escudero dai man an makaluwas sa pagkakandidato. An sira mahal, an karne mahal pa kan presyo sa Manila. Hasta ngonian marangas an NPA. Puro pulitika. Makaheherak an Bacon. Hu,hu,hu,hu! This is factual and not hearsay. Come to Bacon and see for yourself!

Hello El Muralla, may I know what achievement Mayor Dioneda has made to Bacon? Ah, you are right! Improvement of race! Maraming nalahian si Mayor sa Bacon during his incumbency. Because he is good looking, of course, the product is the same, di bha! Future actors and actresses. Now that he is again the powerful Mayor of Sorsogon City, again nagkakalat na naman ng lahi. Does immorality brings good governance? I consider Bacon a victim of exploitation of Mayor Dioneda during his 3 terms as Mayor. Bacon was stripped of its historical and cultural glory as a municipality because of his political ambition. The vast forested mountains of Bacon where Narra tree once grows abundantly has been cut down because of his personal gain. Or if Narra logs are being transported by trucks, seated infront beside the driver is either of his brothers, Entong or Paeng. So no Policeman dared to apprehend it. Brod El Muralla what accomplishment then did Mayor Dioneda has done to the former glorious Bacon. Least to say, if Bacon was not merged to Sorsogon City, don't you know the vast natural resources of Bacon that will help in the development of the municipality, sana? The marbles and coal deposit at Gatbo, the BACMAN geothermal plant, the airport, the Banao port, the white beaches from San Juan to Sawanga, the large rice and coconut plantations. See? To those who love Bacon, let us gather and united to find ways to bring back BACON to its former entity and distinction as a municipality. It can be, like Daraga from Legaspi. All we need is someone who will author a Bill for its separation from Sorsogon City. Por delicadeza, Leovic Dioneda will not do it nor any of his avid supporters like Maning Eco, Lorna Figueroa, the elites of bacon, etc. Bacon was a precious jewel which was robbed from our possession. Kahit na anong kagandahan ang sasabihin natin patungkol sa Bacon, there is always apprehension in our minds. Are we not promoting Sorsogon City in general? Think about it, New Yorker and foreign based Bacongnons (Asia, Middle East and Europe, sa Dubai marami tayong Bacongnon!)

Anonymous said...

Totoo!
Then Congressman Chiz Escudero authored the bill merging Bacon to Sorsogon City for the political ambition of Mayor Dioneda. Mayor Dioneda can no longer run for Mayor of Bacon in view of the completion of his 3rd term. He cannot let his wife run for Mayor then becoz she did not win during her contest as Barangay Chairman of Poblacion Bacon, a sign of defeat if ever she runs for Mayor. So Dioneda tried all means so that during the Plebiscite, YES would win favoring the cityhood of Sorsogon with the inclosure of Bacon.

So what good news now can we expect from Bacon but only reminiscing the good old days of Bacon. Hearing a news coming from Bacon is a news update of Sorsogon City in general. Its sad....so sad.

Bacon can never be developed commercially. Sorsogon is commercially booming with the mushrooming of commercial establishments.

Bacon is left as it is. During typhoons or heavy rains, pigsabunan is flooded up to the Bacon East Central School. During this season, some residents evacuated to high ground barangay.

True yong sinabi ni US Bacongnon nothing is ever heard of Bacon, if ever Bicol Region is mentioned. As far as beaches is concerned you will always read about the Rizal Beach in Gubat not the Tolonggapo Beach. Pili nut? It is from Bulusan not in Bacon.

Good day to you MS ANONYMOUS! Personally, I don't know anyone from Manduriao family. I only know them by name because their clan are well-known to our town. I was not born nor a resident of Bacon but my parents are pure-blooded Bacongnons (both my family & middle names start with "D"). I regularly visit Bacon (Sorsosogon) because of some business. I also inherited some farmlands in San..., making me a Tax-payer of Bacon (Sor). I know the INs & OUTs of Bacon and most of all I'm fluent in our dialect/s.

I like your last 2 comments on some issues and it's about time to have something like that from the contributors of Ms Annie (although some were deleted). How about his jueteng issues and apartments in Fairview?

By the way, you did not answer my question on my last post. I know you're my long lost cousin from Australia.

El Muralla, I am sorry to disappoint you. but I am not the anonymous with the long commentaries. if I had that kind of information which the other Anonymous supplied, I think I should know the Manduriao’s also ‘coz you said the latter is well known in Bacon. Anonymous # 2 of Nov. 1, 2008, 1:25 and 2:31 a.m. must be a very good observer of Bacon activities and its players. If I may comment on his contributions it seems that Bacon has already been submitted to gangsterism. SAD. now I wonder how Raul Manduriao would write about Bacon.

with no disrespect I choose not to tell you if I am from Australia or not but i have been diligently reading your comments and jenny's.

In addition to my comment at 9:57 A.M. this morning, El Muralla, i would also want to add that juan dela cruz and new yorker have been putting in interesting remarks. by the way, I don't see remarks from juan dela cruz anymore. Wonder what happened. wonder if he felt bad when his remark in another section got deleted by the administrator.

An post na ini garo balagon kan langatong. Nagpuon bilang preskong bareta, nagtapos bilang magatol an malanit na paghururon. Still, given all the contentious and provocative statements, we Bacongnons online should consider this a positive development. When we articulate despair, we are pushed to look for hope; when we lashed out at empty rhetoric, we move one step closer in our search for concrete and lasting solutions. Here online we gnash our teeth and despair for Bacon, but by simply expressing our discontent we are able to surface (even under the guise of anonymity) some dreadful truths known by many Bacongnon yet hardly written about. This is an exercise in speaking truth to power. So we could only hope that Mayor Dioneda manages to read what is written here. Those who are close to City Administrator Lorna Figueroa must also invite her to read what we are writing. If she is brave and candid enough, she should respond. Maybe, the next time she write about the Dioneda Administration's putative accomplishment, there will be a line or two already about what they are doing about the water and sewage system in Bacon, a line or two about post-harvest facilities to help the farmers and the fisherfolks, a line or two about ecotourism, etc. If we believe in our capacity as a people to articulate our grievances and transform these into a political agenda that we could transmit to the powers that-be, then mapapatunayan ta sa positibong paagi an fuerza kan kasabihan na, "An basol, magatol."

To COGENT:

Thank you so much for articulating in print what had been in my thoughts.

Anonymous said...

i don't understand why those who remarked in the Sandataan 2008-2009 article do not see what cogent is saying or what the others in this section have posted. someone even suggested that there is nothing wrong in Bacon. have they no idea what it is to be ethical and morally sound? don’t they know that these two words encompass every human activity?

cogent, I have something in mind in fact i was about to post it. it is about informing Bacongnons of the importance of electing the right candidate, the effect of proper administration, proper education with no mention of names or partisanship. and it is not to be a discreet or secretive action. pero it might start something disagreeable. It may look foolish sa iba but in this kind of world everybody has to try something better for everyone.

sandataan, alumni and the like will be in a good position to do it. most of them, not all, i hope, can not think beyond the partying.

Anonymous said...

Reading the comments from COGENT, Annonymous and others, it seems that what is desperately needed in Bacon is a charismatic political figure that can UNITE the Bacongnons into a politcal force that can compel changes or improvement needed.

When shall a redeemer comes that can effectively challenged the present powers?

Am I injecting politics into the conversation or just merely reacting to the previous comments?

Hello there.

I am currently writing a paper about the merger of Bacon-Sorsogon.

I would like to ask the people here why they voted NO or YES for merger/cityhood.

I will really appreciate it.
