Sandataan! It is December & again the officers and active members of the association are in a frenzy of preparation for the Annual Reception traditionally held every New Years’ eve. The Ballroom; the orchestra; the caterer have all been contracted. The ticket-invitations continuously distributed…
Ad solicitation is at its last phases; their contracts & texts in & articles for printing are compiled. The Souvenir program is ready to go to press.
This is the Sandataan of more than two decades ago when from its inception in 1934, it evolved from a tradition to an institution with primary objectives of promoting the Bicol culture, unity & harmony among Bacongnons and the Bicolanos, render assistance & support to all socio-economic, civic & religious activities and projects that uplift Bacon.
Sandataan is also a silent renewal of the vows of friendships and brotherhood among Bacongnons-a bond that linked them to one another.
A time to relax after a year’s labor, meet old friends; renew acquaintances; dance to old refrains-relive old and fading memories; perhaps rekindle flickering fires of love.
And from among the young new loves are born.
Old couples dancing to the favorite tunes of their youth –eyes lit with the fires of love.
Most of them are gone –departed from this world, others far & away. Age & distance renders them incapable of returning & sadly this old haunting poem
comes to mind:
“When I remember all
The friends so linked together,
I’ve seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather,
I feel like one
Who treads alone
Some banquet- hall deserted,
Whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead,
And all but he departed!”
The old and departed worked so hard to preserve the precious heritage of Sandataan. Will our children & their children resuscitate this dying institution?

Allow me to finish the poem
The Light of Other Days
by Thomas Moore
When I remember all
The friends so linked together,
I've seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather,
I feel like one
Who treads alone
Some banquets- hall deserted,
Whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead,
And all but he departed!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of others days around me.
Nostalgic, yet beautiful poem.
i am happy to have experienced in quite a few sandataan's, the enjoyable reunion of several bacongnons--was still in my very juvenile years then. good revival, Mr. Ve Dellosa, a little sad, poignant, but good.
Justo Ve, sir, your Sandataan piece delighted me as well as evoke beautiful memories of an event so authentic and so original a Bacongnon legacy.
Congratulations tabe cay Justo Ve sa articolo manongod sa Sandataan. Medio napaluha aco sa memoria can dacol na Sandataan na naatendaran co can ca aquean co. Moments when I was truly free and happy with friends.
Salamat po.
Justo Ve, your article seems to suggest that there is no more Sandataan in Manila or in Bacon?
Did I correctly understand? I feel so sad that if indeed the Sandataan is dead.
Every article in this website is giving me goose pimples. The articles are so evocative and poignant. Justo Ve, thank you.
Sandataan, how I missed it.
Mr. Dellosa, you seem to suggest that in the current crop of Bacongnons, there is NO(nada;zero)community and social leader that had replaced those who for decades carried on the organizational skill and dedication to celebrate the Sandataan event.
Is Sandataan irrelevant to the times? I don't think so. It is needed now more than ever.
That Bacon legacy will soon be gone.
Sandataan current officers are planning to incorporate it to Sorsogon, and perhaps change the name.
I pray that nobody, much less, a Bacongnon, should be responsible or an advocate to erase the Sandataan name and legacy. It'sanother "sacrilege" in a long line of despicable destructions of Bacon legacies. The Bacon identity, the Church's door, the Basud bridge, Tolong Gapo, the ancient Spanish fort.
The last time I attended Sandataan before I left the Philippines was in the 1980's. It was a memorable event and the last time I saw old friends. I remember the Sandataan president as a Dellosa. May I know if the author of the piece, Justo Ve, is in anyway related to that Dellosa. Thank you.
I remember then former officers of Sandataan: an Eco, Dellosa, Ebio,Logronio, Lim, Dioquino, etc. Can anyone help me name those dear Bacongnons, the strong pillars of Bacon who so honorably represented their generation in upholding the true Sandataan spirit.
Whence shall another?
Answer to Dec.29 question
Ve Dellosa was once a President of Sandataan so was his older brother Atty.Mimir J. Dellosa.
Sorry, but the name Ebio does not ring the bell.
Bacongnons celebrated Sandataan last month.
Yes, there is still a Sandataan,
Jenny Latosa-Morales is the President, daughter of Pepito Latosa from Pongco, Bacon.
Yesterday, I received a delayed greeting card, and the info that there was a Sandataan Grand Reunion and Ball at Jade Valley, Quezon City on Dec. 30, 2006.
We, readers of the website, inspite of this instant technology extremely lack correspondents or contributors who can inform us of news of interests to Bacongnons all over the world.
I request that above matter be rectified.
Thank you.
To Bacongnon in New York 1/14
We added to 2 more regular contributors to facilitate your request, hopefully.
I appreciate the input.
