The Official Bacon Report - Lorna Figueroa

The Poblacion of Bacon and extended to Caricaran and other nearby barangays is now visibly cleaner and brighter than before. The garbage collection is more systematic and regular and the eco-aides are busy cleaning our town more than ever before.

The old municipio which during the last administration was desecrated by replacing the sign "BACON MUNICIPAL HALL" to 'SANGGUNIANG PANLUNGSOD - SORSOGON CITY" is now back to its old, historical real name - BACON MUNICIPAL HALL - a reminder of our history when this hall was constructed in 1958.
It is now a building we can be proud of once again. It has been repaired, repainted and put into very good use. The whole government center in Bacon which has several buildings now houses the Bacon Satellite Offices which includes, Civil Registry, Treasury, Assessor"s Office, Social Welfare & Development Office, Agriculture Office, Health Center which has a fulltime doctor, dentist, nurses and other health workers.

The old building itself has the Bacon Action Center which is open 24 hours for those needing emergency help, esp, those needing the use of ambulance or other vehicles. We have a standby ambulance and a jeepney which people can use for burial, weddings, transporting patients who do not yet need the services of an ambulance. The Mayor has a Satellite Office also in Bacon where he meets the Bacongnons and conducts weddings for our "kabanwas".

On the second floor is our pride, the first in the Bicol Region, the Kiddie Center with a Toy Library, Book Library and Activity Center for children.

We also have plans of converting the former Municipal Trial Court to a High School and College Public Library and to transfer the Center for Learning Resource or the Public Library for adults to the former COMELEC and BIR offices also on the second floor of the old municipio, thereby putting all libraries in one place, so mothers and fathers who bring their children to the Kiddie Center will also have a place where they can go to relax and learn.

So much is happening, the old public market in the center of Sorsogon has been temporarily relocated elsewhere. A new building will be constructed right after the completion of the construction of the waste water treatment facility there. That way, the dirty water will be recycled and will no longer run to the Sorsogon Bay which was sadly unattended and uncared in the past administration which resulted to a very high degree of Red Tide contamination which the present leader is now trying to arrest.
With assistance from The Asia Foundation we are conducting a series of seminar-workshops for LGU employees regarding counter-corruption and Service Excellence. We have already awarded to deserving beneficiaries some 300 homes at our Gawad Kalinga in Guinlajon. Next week we will be awarding to the first 50 beneficiaries their homes in the Core Shelter Program aided by the Habitat for Humanity and UN. This is exclusively for Bacongnons and it is located in sitio Danao in Caricaran.

Back to our beloved Bacon. Now under the new leader, the Fish Sanctuary in San Juan, Bacon is once again protected. Plans of putting a Mariculture Park in Sta. Lucia and Salvacion is also in the wings. Of course, the beach resort in Bacon, our beloved Tolong Gapo has never looked so good and clean with lamps at night and colorful banners in its entire coastline.

I really seen changes in Bacon today. Compare to previous admin, Bacon now is really marvelous! I have a better picture of our town hall taken last July, together with our new city hall. Pls. visit my site at: http://elmuralla.multiply.com/photo

Thanks Lorna Figueroa for the excellent report.

Congratulations for a job well done.

I am happy with the accomplishment so far with the present Bacon admisnistration. I expect more good things to happen in the coming years.

Very good report. Thanks Ms. Figueroa.

Lorna's official report is authentic. I like it.

Thanks!

I really don’t care whose administration it is.
When I look at a politician, I don’t see one person alone; I want to see what he represents, people who influenced him, his education & religion, his views & morals.

But what really matter are the accomplishments of the elected public servants.
And all I care about is to bring back the glory of the old Bacon with added technology worthy to be called a part of a city.

This is the year we will start to regain Bacon's greatness? We can do so only if we are independent from Sorsogon City.

Calling all Bacongnons here in the Philippines and abroad: Please vote for MAYON VOLCANO in the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

It is also our pride...we, Bicolanos that Mayon Volcano be included in the New 7 Wonders of Nature!

it is nice to read all these improvements. i have a question: considering the travel to a place like Bacon, not to mention to stay and enjoy the sights, what is the danger level of the presence of rebels around the area? i must admit that it is such a turn-off to put your life at stake when you know you could face death or any mishap on the way or while enjoying Bacon fresh air?

To Harmony:

In my opinion, if you go there on a visit, please don't advertise a lot that you are "Stateside" balikbayan. Go around with the locals, friends and relatives. Don't stay too long and don't spread around too much the U.S.greens.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Annie for posting back our Mayor.

Guapo mananggad ang satong Mayor.
Tunay na Bacongnon pareho ko.

Anonymous said...

2002 balikbayan, thanks very much. good thing i am not a person taken to bragging and i don't have the "U.S. greens" to satisfy wrong thoughts. but by the tone of your reply, there is still something to be nervous about (short stay only? how short is best?). i hope i can overcome this because i really want to see Bacon while I am still young and enjoy and introduce the place to my young brood (don't want them to face danger as well)

to harmony

Many balikbayans stay in Bacon for several months and seem comfortable. Others have an acute sense of risk and stays only for a few days.
But please take note that nothing bad had ever happened to any tourist or balikbayan.

There is so much to enjoy in Bacon: those fresh, delicious native dishes; old, familiar sights and sounds are again recaptured; the company of old friends and relatives surrounds you once more.

There is absolutely nothing to fear but fear itself. A fear that never happened in Bacon yet and may never happen except in the minds of the fearful.

I say Harmony, Go for it.

What a shame to have your name linked into a lowly scandal.

I can't believe it.

Anyone with an assumed name which is tantamount to Annonymity can easily charge anyone with the worst crime posssible and never has to account for it or take any responsibility for that charge.

I really don't think this is the right place to make such accusations, nor is it proper and fair.

rxcztWhat exactly is the proper process to give Bacon a distinct, respectable position? If Bacon has been conveniently “processed” at its own expense, what legalities are involved to undo this? Is a legal forum being held? Or should interested Bacongnons meet first and decide a more organized approach? Consultation among its residents is imperative. What kind of assistance is necessary, and from whom, for immediate efficacy? Narratives from everyone, though sweet, do little to help for lack of objective stance. Who is the best person to lead this project? Who should be his/her effective team in negotiations?

Anonymous said...

In reality & in fairness I give credit to the city administrator, Lorna, for some of the development/improvement of Bacon.
Keep it up.

Any movement of any kind be it a political or social issues in Bacon must be led by a credible prominent resident in Bacon with some financial support from Bacongnons abroad or in Metropolitan Manila.

Lip service from anywhere will led to nowhere. That will be like the Republicans trying to "change" the corruption and ineptitude of the Republican Bush-Cheney administration.

To: Parisian Worker

I think McCain is a great candidate because he believes the U.S. economy is sound and because he will continue the tax cuts for the corporations which will kindly trickle their riches to the poor. He is brilliant to choose as VP Gov. Palin who is a foreign policy expert with Alaska being close to Russia. Palin is also a economy expert because she favors oil drillings in Alaska and the whole of U.S. In addition Palin is also a champion for family values like sex abstinence for young girls before marriage.
Please vote McCain and Palin.

Anonymous said...

Parisian worker, please remember that McCain is a real hero who believes that multi billion tax cuts for oil companies and more oil drillings will surely lower the gasoline prices. McCain believes that Bush erroneously had not given enough to those oil companies which caused the skyrocketing of oil prices.
Vote wisely, Vote McCain.

Yes! US Bacongnons go for McCain!

With US economy in crisis we don't need someone in White House "on the job training".

We don't need a radical change from someone who is a neophyte.

i only have to hear from an ex-die-hard democrat who jumped out of this party’s ship, to be fully convinced that obama is not the right man for the presidency. i have already been apprehensive about him. i also notice how he has changed -- i truly dislike his swaggering manner now, quite made more prominent by the overly chin-up, sneering look. lady lynn forester de rotschild is now supporting mccain and palin. she has provided the democratic party with huge sums and has worked hard for hillary to be either president or veep. she said that she still remains a democrat but she believes mccain and palin would work better for the people. she said obama is all about himself and actually an elitist. when told that because of her life status, she is the elitist one. her answer is that the problem with the democrats is that they play the class card and it becomes a wedge, therefore promoting divisiveness. lady lynn also said that the democrats makes it appear that they are the only ones who could protect women’s rights. this notion apparently is placed on women’s neck like a leash by the democrats, when in fact, women’s rights are already upheld in the constitution.

i guess it takes somebody from within to know what really is going on. but then again, shouldn’t obama win if only to give an image of change and to please the international community? he is the emblem of the “theory of change” as oppose to the real acts of change.

an old man would not spend the remaining years of his life destroying the good name of his family. for this matter, i believe mccain will not copy what wrong had been done in the past. no heroic man would destroy his country the second time around.

I had to read this report again. It is a joy to learn of the improvements especially, the Kiddie Centre and the forthcoming Public Library for adults. Could we have pictures of this centre for children? Thank you, Lorna, and of course, to others involved as well, indirectly or otherwise, for your role in this update/rebuilding of Bacon. More strength to you!

Anonymous said...

hooray. I like McCain and Bush because they both like the war in Iraq to continue, they both like to give tax cuts to oil companies, and they both say that the economy is sound. I like Palin because she is not in favor of stem cells research and in favor of guns to everyone.

Both McCain and Palin

Anonymous said...

Good for you independent voter.

Gosh, what a comparison between Obama & Palin;
It came out that Palin has more experience.

Too bad, just enjoy watching Obama's SWAGGER!

Anonymous said...

I like McCain because he has been for 26 years in D.C. Congress with an experience equal to Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. McCain will also do great things for the country like those experienced gentlemen are doing now.

Palin, an experienced person too who is so proud of her pregnant daughter, really chanpios family values.

Vote McCain and Palin.

I wonder about Obama’s childhood, parents of different race, raised by a young mother & estranged from his biological father.
He could manifest an inner conflict or deep hatred that requires careful psychoanalysis.
Good that he has a pastor that guides him to peace & comfort. Hmmm…was his name Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

Anonymous said...

Both Obama and McCain do not have the accurate expertise to come up with immediate or long-term solutions to the woes of their country. It is not as simplistic as their speeches; same with Pelosi and her comrades who try to appear very knowledgeable about the right economics for the U.S. This group should collaborate unselfishly with those with better statistical, economic and psychological cerebral capacities (who by the way are also quite at a loss for accurate solutions). It is more of wait and see, considering an expansive uncertainty, for some projects to kick in, with the bailouts and mergers here and there, not to mention foreign reactions, Chinese loans, wars, domestic tensions, etc., before proceeding aggressively with long-term plans, which are oftentimes bragged about by political partisans. Add the political stupidity of trying to find out how many houses and cars one presidential candidate has over the other. As if to be born rich is a mortal sin. As if the sins of the parents, should there be any, are the sins of the children. And to spend on insults at the pretense of just trying to know what Palin will discuss or ask Karzai when they meet, with Jack Cafferty, old as he is, the eager vessel of childish, irresponsible, insensitive questions, quite welcomed by an equally retarded audience. Sometimes you’d think some people are really deserving of all the economic and social confusion going on. There are far better things to do or think about on how to assess the current candidates. The more divisive the people are, the farther the solutions to their problems are.

At least, both political parties are fear-mongers. After 9/11, everybody was given their dose of fear. Not that, that kind of fear has diminished considerably and Obama continues to spread fear, though of another kind. How senseless! He is just like the deliverer of the earlier fear. He is just short of saying “go check under your beds, ‘coz a Republican maybe lurking there”. And I thought he is better than that. It doesn’t match the artistry of how he delivers his speeches.

But then again, Americans should realize that dramatic speeches and eloquence can be learned, more easily in fact, if you are determined to grab the jackpot. I learned through a good teacher how to declaim and deliver oratorical pieces effectively, but addressing economic woes is as hieroglyphic as the real one. Not that my other skills are negligible.

There should have been a better candidate. Perhaps the presidents of the past including the dead ones should be summoned to give their input. These are dire circumstances.

Still glad to be in Europe.

I like McCain because he will continue the best economic policy of Bush and Cheney. They all have great, impressive experiences.

Yes, it's a brilliant move to make Palin a VP because of her credentials as a foreighn policy expert(she can see Russia from her house in Alaska). Also, she just met with foreign leaders to discuss solutions to the economic crisis and military strategies.

In our present economic crisis it is very important that we now need the heroisnm and patriotism of MCain. We need to continue spending the billions in the Iraq war and billions tax cuts more for the oil companies.
We also need the foreign expertise of Palin who recently shook hands with the foreign leaders in the U.N.
Please vote Palin & McCain

Well, well, well. Good to know that these companies that the US government are bailing out contributed a substantial amount to Obama's campaign.
With only a fraction to McCain.

Yes, yes, Palin is beautiful and an experienced forign policy expert(Alaska and Russia neighbors) and a maverick reformer who was against the $500 million bridge to nowhere before she was for it.

I will also vote for McCain for his recent display of heroism. He suspended his campaign to go to Washington D.C. to bail out those gigantic, corrupt, bankrupt corporations in Wall Street. His display of heroism is the same heroism he displayed when he led the senate to go to Iraq to save the U.S. from weapons of mass destruction of Hussain.

Can we narrow down comments in this blog to something worthy? There is no need to be redundant about somebody's fanaticism over a candidate. Nor is it necessary to be repetitious about a candidate's disagreeable character. Two posts of comments is more than enough for something that does not promote good values. Shame. Give some respect to Lorna's article.

REPORT FROM BACON (SERIES#2)

The Catholic Order of Franciscan Sisters established a small hospital in Bacon, more than 2 years ago called St. Therese Hospital. The Sisters recently added a secondary school called Immaculate Heart of Mary School. The small hospital appears neat and its in-house skeleton medical staff highly competent. Standby doctors and specialists are also on call. The report gave special emphasis in the great service the hospital is giving to Bacongnons which accepts charity, indigent patients with some assistance from the Dept. of Social Welfare.

The strong typhoons which hit Bacon in the past years and the current economic downturn globally seem to aggravate the local economy. Prices of commodities seem almost beyond the reach of ordinary Bacongnons. One can see a lot of worried and confused faces in the public market.

The old unrepaired, roof leaking public market in Pigsabunan is still being used. It is so crowded and too outdated and sufficient only to the town's population of about 40 years ago when it was built.

There is a present surge of crimes reported in Bacon. Burglaries and thieveries are occuring more often. There was even a hold up of a delivery truck in Caricaran, Bacon. No one was apprehended. All the crimes reported remain unsolved.

Inspite of the amazing 2 Philippine senators (Escudero & Honasan)beloved sons of Sorsogon,
there seem to be no visible assistance or benefit received for Sorsogon City. (It must also be noted that the congressman representing Sorsogon is the father of Senator Francis Escudero.)

The Community Development Fund which is supposed to assist Sorsogon City is allegely being used for the personal benefits of politicians in power.

Bacongnons are again extremely frustrated for the utter lack of assistance in the construction of the Bacon Airport and the Banao Port. Those 2 great Bacon projects have been languishing in wanton abandonment for decades.

The church marble flooring project as well as the painting of the church edifice were all completed already. However the church still owes the contractor about P280,000 pesos of unpaid balance.

Report is dated Sept.9,2008. Received here in New York Sept.26,2008.

I agree with you new york bacongnon, despite of the so called improvement in Bacon many of our kababayan there suffer from lack of assistance especially in remote barangays. Some says that these assistance diverted to other areas in Sorsogon City. Even Barangay health workers claim that their monthly allowance cut down, compare to the prevoius city administrator...

More Reports From Bacon:

While the limelights are focused on those Bacongnons in political positions such as Sorsogon City Mayor Dioneda and and City Administrator Lorna Figueroa, there are also many outstanding Bacongnons in the private sector who are very active in community service. Stalwarts in civic and religious services mentioned are the following: Jun Patria, Ofelia Reyes Azas, Manuel V.Eco, Amado Manduriao, Jr., Myrna M.Dimaano, Melchor Atutubo, Norma Atutubo, Charito, Elsa & Eden Ayo, Gloria Serrano, Atty. R. Morato. Also, many retired and active teachers, senior citizens donate their services in community
organizations such as the school projects of the Central School Alumni, serving in committees for the town fiesta, fund raising campaigns for church projects, etc.
They are the uncelebrated heroes of Bacon.

Thanks, New Yorker, for trying to get the conversation back to the subject of the report. I wish those who insist on injecting US politics to a decidedly local report on Bacon and Sorsogon City would set up their own blog so that they can write to their heart's content on anything they wish. Please keep this conversation in point.

Bacongnon man sa NY is correct. We had more than enough of these unnecessary political exchanges.

New Yorker, thank you for the respite you delivered. It was more than welcomed. Interesting indeed! I would like to know/read more about the uncelebrated heroes you mentioned. My juvenile years had some of them embedded in my memory. I’ve met them, seen them, more than a dozen times; but, childhood preoccupation and the old fashion notion or propriety of children “not being heard but just seen”, deprived me of knowing their nobler inclinations. I will be very appreciative of articles about them.

Mea Culpa. I forgot to include among the names of Bacongnons who are active in Bacon in community services: Raming Botial.

He is among those who quietly serves the community unsung and uncelebrated. He lives in Basud.

My apology.

Additional Report From Bacon:

The third week of this month of September, there was the traditional celebration of Our Lady of Penafrancia highlighted with the fluvial procession in the sea closest to the Bacon coastlines starting from Tolong Gapo to the Saudan area near the public market. The procession then proceeded by walking to the church
through Basud for the mass after a solemn "Salve". This celebration was participated with all kinds of small boats and hundreds of parishioners.

NOTE:In closing this Bacongnon reporter from N.Y. City never experienced above religious fluvial celebration when he was still living in Bacon many years ago. Did anyone among you readers experienced such?

Can I comment about the restoration of the church in Bacon? In order to preserve our history, we have to keep the original structure of the church especially the inner view, but according to the reports and pictures they painted the walls in and out and the flooring converted to marbles. Is that the correct way of preserving our land mark? Why they just built another modern church instead of destroying this historical structure. Who is the responsible of these and why the city administrator authorized these alteration...

Anonymous said...

The City Administrator is a government employee and has nothing to do with the church.

Separation of church and state remember?

Anonymous said...

Agree with New Yorker - the City Administrator has nothing to do with the Church renovations. For the record, she was against the desecration through modernization of the church and in favor of its restoration to the original. Apparently, the church authorities do not care about history nor tradition. Only they can authorize such a monstrosity.

As for the celebration of the Penafrancia Fiesta in Bacon, New Yorker might be interested to know that the same fiesta is also celebrated in Jersey City (not too far from NY) with a "traslacion", nine day novena and a fluvial procession on the Hudson River. All masses are concelebrated by at least 5-7 priests. After the fluvial procession and mass, there is a cultural program with free food for every one. At the last fiesta, there was an estimated 1200 (at least) people who attended. The fiesta is held on the 3rd Saturday of September every year, with the traslacion 9 days before. I was one of the founders of this group in 1989. New Yorker, you might want to come next year. I am no longer active in organizing the events (I went on to other involvements that required a lot of my time) but I make it a point to attend the novena and fiesta every year.

Anonymous said...

To Bacongnon Man Sa NY:

Thank you for the invitation. I truly like your interesting comments.

Anonymous said...

Very enticing festivities. I would love to be a witness to such, in Bacon or Jersey City; but, definitely Bacon first.

Yes, about the church. What happened? I saw a picture of it with blue and white paint in front and what seems to be a divider by the entrance, quite similar to a big board in a rushed, poorly planned meeting or a divider in a restaurant besieged by a logjam of customers. With this facade who would think of marble floors. Mismatch!

I don't know if that image has since been changed. However, I believe that the church's serene ambience that was infused by the propriety and grace of the past, should somehow be integrated into any renovation and maintenance. This is attainable with objective collaboration among the right parties.

Wouldn't it be appropriate for such a landmark to continue to reflect the culture and educated activities of the past, the pride and glory of the present, the treasure of the future?

Anonymous said...

I don't want to point anyone or any organization regarding the destruction of our only remaining historical landmark in Bacon, but if somebody have a concerned and truly devoted to preserve our heritage like the present administrator. She can make a move to prevent any further alteration in that church with the helps of concerned community. Some of our Kababayan gave a donation for this project knowing that it is a religious act but if somebody explain them that it can demise the cultural value of Bacongnon, then they think twice before giving any offering.

I remember that church when I am in secondary at Annunciation College. I always amazed of the scenery of the altar, the grotto, the sculptors during our everyday holy rosary and once a week holy mass.

When we were playing with my classmates in front of the church and noticed the crumbled KAMPANARYO, I make a promise that if God gave me a chance to have a fortune I will someday restore the original structure, but unfortunately I'm just an ordinary worker here in Manila now...

Anonymous said...

I truly share your sentiment “inaki sa Bacon.”

Likewise I am for preservation of the original structure of the church.
But if it is crumbling & hazardous of course they can replace it, only with architectural design similar to the original. Just like any other historical land sites.

In the past our city administrator, Ms. Lorna together with other civic leaders tried to stop/remove the toilet tiled barricade at the front entrance of the church but due to unfortunate circumstance somehow it did not materialize…not yet.

A crumbling church tower, a toilet tiled barricade, marble flooring & P280,000.00 debt,
I can agree w/ Ms. Jenny “it’s a Mismatch!”

Additional Report From Bacon:

1. Direct from an independent source in Bacon confirmed the highly positive report regarding the achievements by Lorna Figueroa, the City Administrator. The source likewise confirmed that people are impressed with the integrity and efficiency of Ms. Figueroa. However, the reports of the non-accomplishments and other negative aspects of the administration as reported by New Yorker are likewise factuals.

2. The same Source also informed me that the controversial structure constructed in the front door (facing Canda/Pigsabunan)of the church by the former parish priest(now deceased) had already been demolished, as ordered by the new parish priest Father Buenaobra who is by the way here in the U.S. for a 3-month vacation. The disassembling of the controversial structure was headed by Jun Patria who was one of the strong advocates together with Manuel V. Eco and Lorna Figueroa in the preservation of many of the Bacon legacies. This matter if you recall was featured in the very first article of this website titled "Heritage" on Nov.4, 2006.

3. There is now a separate parish independent from Our Lady of Annunciation parish in Poblacion, Bacon in Buenavista. The Parish Priest is Father Terwel.

4. There is persistent talk in Sorsogon City about alleged feud between Vice Mayor Edmundo Atutubo (whose father is also from Bacon) and the City Mayor Dioneda.

In addition to the parish in Buenavista that Rene of California reported on, there is also a new parish centered in San Roque. The two were made into parishes at the same time.

Mother,s Day - Inspiring story about Mother

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away.

As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing.

He asked what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars."

The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose."

He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers.

As they were leaving, he offered the girl a ride home.
She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.'

She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave.

The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house.

Bacon is our motherland. We are the sons and daughters of Bacon. It's good to refresh memories about it. Though it has lost its municipal identity, how about, once in a while let us drive the more or less six hundred kilometers that will bring us back to Bacon.(And find means to reincarnate the town.)
